Calhoun County Animal Shelter
An organized Citizens Corp volunteer group called, Disaster Animal Welfare Group (DAWG), set up a temporary animal shelter. DAWG volunteers work with Calhoun County Animal Control officials in establishing an organized process of taking care of and checking in animals that arrive with their owners at shelter sites. Radio communication was used to communicate and provide updates with the Calhoun County EOC.
The animal shelter was setup in the parking lot, next to the ARC shelter that was established inside the Hillcrest Baptist Church, located on Highway 431 in Calhoun County. DAWG volunteers have a documented process, which includes a diagram that is used as a reference in setting up secure cages and kennels for the animals. The shelter can handle approximately 20 dogs, 12 cats and other small pets. DAWG members arrived on scene and completed the setup of the shelter in less than 45 minutes.
Evacuees arriving at the shelter with pets were directed to the parking lot to check-in their animals. DAWG representatives would track the animals with an "Animal Intake Form". This form documents all of the necessary information about the animal and its owner. The form also includes medical and medication history for the animal. DAWG volunteers provide the animal owners, information and instructions regarding animal shelter procedures that include, care, feeding and visitation of the animals. DAWG has a complete documented process for checking in and checking out the animals.
DAWG has a written standard operating procedure (SOP) that addresses their animal shelter process. The SOP has safety guidelines that protect the animals, evacuees and DAWG volunteers. DAWG volunteers watch current weather conditions as a safety consideration for how the animal shelter is set up to protect staff and animals. DAWG also works with local veterinarians to provide medical care and medication for the animals.
DAWG provided a secure animal shelter for the exercise. The DAWG volunteers effectively managed the safe care of two dogs that were brought to the shelter. DAWG staff provided a friendly and informative animal shelter for the evacuees of the ARC shelter. The DAWG organization and staff are very organized and professional in their approach to provide animal care and sheltering.
